Built for sports, action, and wildlife photographers, it combines a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture with Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) technology — offering up to 4 stops of shake compensation — and a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) autofocus system for near-silent, high-speed, and highly accurate focusing. Its optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups incorporates two fluorite and two Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) elements, helping to deliver exceptional sharpness, colour accuracy, and reduced chromatic aberration, while also keeping the lens lighter than its predecessors through the use of fluorite glass and a magnesium-alloy barrel. The lens features Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat and Super Integrated Coating to minimise flare and ghosting, and a fluorine-coated front meniscus element that resists dust, moisture, and smears for reliable use in challenging outdoor conditions. An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism ensures consistent, stable exposure during rapid continuous shooting, while a 9-blade rounded diaphragm produces smooth, pleasing bokeh. The detachable, rotatable tripod collar with bearing-supported rotation allows smooth switching between horizontal and vertical orientations, and the lens supports Sport and Tripod VR modes along with a memory recall function for swift focus position retrieval.
