Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva Solera 15 is the flagship of a brand whose roots reach back to nineteenth-century Cuba. After the family relocated its rum-making to the Dominican Republic, it continued the traditional Spanish-style solera method that gives this expression its remarkable smoothness and refinement. Distilled from molasses and matured using the solera process, younger and older rums are gradually blended together as the spirit works its way through a tiered system of casks. Only a small portion is ever drawn from the oldest barrels, softening the character and building the layered complexity that Matusalem is known for. In the glass it is a warm amber, with aromas of vanilla, caramelised sugar, toasted oak and dried fruit. The palate is smooth and elegant, weaving together molasses, honey, cocoa, roasted nuts and gentle oak spice, before a long, velvety finish. Refined enough to sip neat or over ice, it also brings genuine depth to a classic rum cocktail.
